Today in Year 2 Science Club, we discussed the meaning of trace fossils, which provide geological evidence of the activities and behaviours of life in the past. Footprints are one example of a trace fossil and provide us with indirect evidence of life a long time ago. To begin with, we looked at example footprints from a range of local animals, including a fox, badger, bird, and rabbit. Imprints of these footprints were then etched into clay using tools. Following this, plaster was mixed and poured over the imprint to create a cast, much like would happen when a trace fossil forms by sediment drying, hardening and being covered by a new layer of sediment. Now to wait for them to set and become palaeontologists next week- I wonder if we can spot which footprints have been found?
