Year 6 enjoyed an afternoon learning all about Harriet Tubman - remembered as the Moses of her people. A woman born into slavery in America, we found out about her life, her journey to freedom and how she then used this experience to help others. As part of an underground railroad (an escape network, not a real railroad), Harriet was able to follow the stars to guide her north where she could be free. The children listened to the song the people would have sung on their journey to freedom called Follow the Drinking Gourd. We learned it was called this as a codename for The Big Dipper constellation they would have followed. To finish, we copied the star formation and put holes in card to create our own 'drinking gourd'. At home, we can hold them up to the moon and allow the light to shine through forming the constellation Harriet would have followed.
